When you hear the word “espresso,” you remember Italy. Espresso is an Italian coffee. “Barista” is the term used to refer to someone who makes espresso and other types of coffee. A barista uses a machine called an espresso machine to make espresso.
To make a fine shot of espresso, a barista has to learn the art of operating an espresso machine. There are many types of espresso machines which include automatic espresso machine, stove top espresso maker, semi-automatic espresso machine, steam espresso maker, traditional pump-driven espresso machine , piston-driven espresso maker, presso manually operated coffee press and the super automatic espresso machine.
Stove Top Espresso Maker – This type of machine is commonly seen in Portugal, Spain and Italy. This is used to make dark coffee. Water is placed at its bottom chamber. A filter basket is found in the middle chamber. This chamber holds that ground coffee beans. The chamber on top has a filter made of metal and is screwed onto the lowest chamber.
Steam Espresso Maker – As its name implies, a steam espresso maker uses steam pressure as its means of operation. It has a steam unit that generates steam pressure. This machine produces the same products that a stove top oven produces.
Piston-Driven Espresso Maker – This machine is the original and old version of the modern espresso machine. Achille Gaggia developed this machine in 1945.
Traditional Pump-Driven Espresso Machine - This espresso machine is a refined version of a piston machine. You will frequently see this type of machine in commercial espresso bars.
Semi Automatic Espresso Machine – Water in this machine is delivered through a pump. There is a three way valve dissipates the brew pressure that is left in the basket.
Automatic Espresso Machine – It is the same as the semi-automatic espresso machine, except that its flow meter has a group head.
Super Automatic Espresso Machine – This machine grinds coffee automatically. It is self-contained. Just fill the water reservoir and bean hopper and wait until your espresso is done.
Presso Manually Operated Coffee Press – Pre-heated water, in this machine, is placed in an acrylic glass chamber. The hot water enters a chamber just when the arms of the machine are raised.
Now that you know the different types of espresso machine, maybe you can engage in hands-on learning sessions to know how to use each machine.
